Inspiration I’ve come across…and now I’m sharing it with you!

DIY Chalkboard

I was at a church rummage sale a few weeks ago and found this print on canvas for only a dollar.

Initially, I was going to paint the canvas white create my own multi medium mural. But then…something more functional came to mind: a chalkboard! Inspired by a friend, I went to Home Depot and picked up some spray paint primer and chalkboard paint.

First I spray painted primer. After everything was primed, I then painted the canvas with chalkboard paint. The frame got a couple layers of wall paint (durable!).

And the finished product! 🙂

There are SO many possibilities for a huuuge chalkboard!:

-Menu board for the kitchen.
-To-do list for the office.
-Calendar to keep track of the fam’s activities.
-Focal point on mantle (change quote with the seasons.)
…and many more ideas!

I decided to put the chalkboard in a bedroom. I can change the drawing or quote anytime – because it’s just chalk! 🙂

Cost of this DIY chalkboard:
Print – $1
Paint – $8

Sheet Music Flowers

We recently moved into a lovely home in the Chicagoland area. The home is full of character, which I love. For one of the bedrooms’ palettes I’ve chosen dark wood/metal  statement furniture and a variety of soothing white textures (sheet music decoupaged night stand, vintage white linens,  script storage boxes, white wall shelves) . Accents of red and green are found here and there (red window panel, green throw, etc).

However, the wall above the bed needed something….something with character, a monochromatic white color….maybe 3D and movement. After a couple months of thinking, brainstorming and musing, I decided to create sheet music flowers.

You can make them too! All you need is paper and glue (like Elmer’s glue). These pretty flowers are very easy to create  –  not to mention quite inexpensive!:

  1. Cut long petal shapes  out of paper (sheet music, newspaper, paper bags, scrapbook paper, etc).
  2. Glue the tips together to create the flower shape (I did large petals first, let dry…I then did a smaller petal set, let dry…. Once they were both dry, I glued them together.
  3. You can attach these beauties to the wall with tape or with a pin. I chose a pin, because when a breeze flows through the window, the flowers will look as if they are floating across the wall.

Cutie Patootie Kitty Collar

On a day when I had 5 billion things on my to-do list,  inspiration hit me.

And it started at Hobby Lobby.

{Surprised?}

In the Easter section, I found this adorable animal pearl “necklace” adorned with 2 pastel pink bows. I laughed at the thought of actually buying it – but it was just $2…so I plopped it in the cart.

When I got home, I glanced at the lengthy to-do list {with the kitty necklace in hand} as I searched for my lovely 14 year old black and white cat named “Inkin.” Once I found her snoozing on the bed, I switched out her teal diamondy collar with my new ultra girly find.

And giggled. The two pink bows looked like a bit too much – and a bit tooooo girlishly girly.

I picked up Inkin, showed my husband her necklace. He laughed.  After the chuckles subsided he agreed that the two pink bows were a little much. So I took off a cheery green ribbon from a wrapped gift for a special someone {gasp} and replaced the pink bows with the modernly hued apple green bow.

{Side note: Inkin was  wearing her new accessory as I replaced the ribbons. She was chilling on the couch’s arm rest.}

Still giggling at how ridiculous it was for Inkin to have a “pearl necklace” I saw that something was missing. Another dash of color, texture, visual interest…maybe a red button {naww to Christmasy}…or a gold one! {nope..too…neutral}…how about a 4-holed vintage teal button? Yes, of course!

At this time, Inkin was still sitting on the couch’s arm rest. And she stayed there {while still wearing her necklace} as I sewed on the teal button.

Adorable!

{Once the button was attached, Inkin did a great job modeling her cutie patootie kitty collar. }

Moral of the story: even when the to-do list is long, don’t completely ignore a burst of inspiration.

And would some pretty story tell,
Or kiss the place to make it well?
